McIlhinney Comments on Veto of Liquor Privatization Bill

Senate Law and Justice Committee Chairman Chuck McIlhinney (R-10) issued the following statement today in response to Governor Wolf’s veto of legislation to privatize the sale of liquor and wine in Pennsylvania:

“Governor Wolf’s veto of House Bill 466 is a serious blow to the ongoing efforts to privatize the sale of wine and liquor in Pennsylvania. Although many lawmakers and state residents support the idea of getting the state out of the liquor business, the governor’s strong opposition to this concept makes it extremely difficult to envision a scenario in which further consideration of privatization proposals would be fruitful.

“Accordingly, as Chairman of the Senate Law and Justice Committee, I will now shift our focus to improving our system with consumer convenience.

“Throughout the debate regarding Pennsylvania’s liquor laws over the past several years, my goal has been to support proposals to improve convenience for customers. The governor has indicated a willingness to consider limited measures to modernize the system, and I expect similar legislative proposals to be considered by the committee in the months to come."
